Constraining Effective Field Theories from Gravitational Waves to Cosmology (pre-talk for students at 15:30)

Upcoming detections of gravitational waves and cosmological surveys promise to probe gravity at its most fundamental level. I will discuss the various theoretical and observational constraints that exist on any gravitational effective field theory and will highlight how the presence of gravity leads to subtle relations between causality and (sub)luminality. I will provide explicit criteria to be satisfied so as to ensure causality and a standard high energy completion in gravitational effective field theories and illustrate the relevance of such considerations for putting constraints on cosmological models and models relevant for gravitational wave physics.
