The cosmological constant - fundamental or accidental? (pre-talk for students at 15:30)

The origin and interpretation as well as the observed value of the cosmological constant presents a puzzle of particle physics and cosmology. It is therefore suggestive that in transition amplitudes the cosmological constant can appear as property of initial and final states rather than as parameter of the Lagrangian. This is the case in the unimodular version of Einstein’s theory of gravity. In the talk these two possibilities will be compared, together with implications for the emergence of time and the related wave functions in quantum gravity.
