Effective Field Theories for Heavy and Light New Physics
The absence of direct discoveries of new particles beyond the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) reveals important information on the nature of potential new physics: Any undiscovered particle must either be so heavy that it cannot be produced at the LHC or interact only weakly with the SM particles. Both of these scenarios can be efficiently described using effective field theories (EFTs) which distill the fundamental low-energy effects of a complex new-physics model. In this talk, we will discuss how EFTs allow us to efficiently probe the new-physics parameter space and pinpoint the early signs of beyond SM physics.
