The moat regime: what it is and how to find it
Strongly interacting matter is believed to have a rich phase structure. At large density, various exotic phases with spatial modulations have been suggested by model studies. A common feature of all these phases is that they contain excitations whose static energy is minimized at nonzero momentum and hence resembles a moat. This moat regime can leave observable experimental signatures. In this talk, I will discuss the properties of the moat regime in QCD and possible signatures in heavy-ion collisions.
