Macroscopic QCD phenomena at the high-energy frontier (PRETALK for students at 15:30 h)
The emergence of macroscopic medium properties in high-energy nuclear collisions is a fascinating manifestation of the many-body physics of Quantum Chromodynamics. The collective particle behaviour in heavy-ion collisions is strong evidence that these large collision systems create a new phase of matter called the Quark-Gluon Plasma. However, the striking discovery of the same phenomena in much smaller systems of proton-proton and proton-lead collisions at the LHC has confounded heavy-ion physics expectations and the conventional high-energy physics picture. I will review the recent progress and future plans in uncovering the physical origins of this universal macroscopic behaviour.
