Yukawa couplings from string theory
For some time now it is possible to engineer string models with the exact field content of the (MS)SM, plus fields uncharged under the standard model group. Modern heuristic search methods, such as reinforcement learning and genetic algorithms, have played an important role in identifying such models. This talk will focus on recent progress towards fully realistic string models of particle physics, with an emphasis on finding models with the correct field content and phenomenologically viable Yukawa couplings. This involves string-inspired and derived models of Froggatt-Nielsen type, heuristic model search and first-principle calculations using neural network techniques. I will present examples of the first calculation of quark Yukawa couplings from string theory and of string Froggatt-Nielsen models consistent with observed fermion masses and mixing.
