The QCD Phase Diagram from Lattice QCD: Precision, Fluctuations, and Control of Errors

The phase structure of QCD at finite temperature and baryon density is a long-standing problem in the theory of strong interactions. Lattice QCD provides a non-perturbative framework in which thermodynamic observables can be computed with systematically improvable control over uncertainties. At finite baryon density, however, direct simulations are obstructed by the infamous sign problem. In this talk I will discuss how lattice QCD nevertheless constrains the QCD phase diagram through studies of the equation of state and conserved-charge fluctuations. I will outline how information at finite density is obtained indirectly, how uncertainties are assessed, and what present lattice results imply for the phase structure of QCD.
